AUSTRALASIAN GREBE: Tachybaptus novaehollandiae

Identifying characteristics: Small brown bird, usually seen in water. A rather shy and solitary. Breeding bird, has distinctive dark head with yellow on cheek and brown streak on back of neck. Non­breeding is plainer with white neck.

Call: is a loud trill; this bird is more often heard than seen.

Habitat/Distribution: Found with fresh water, usually still and with much vegetation, throughout Australia.
