Archer Fish
Toxotes chatareus

The 'Archer Fish' are found in the fresh and brackish waters of tropical Asia and Australia They have a distinctive shape, being round but flattened along the top edge. They feed on invertebrates that fall into the water, being well known for their ability to catch their prey even outside the water's edge. Some species leap out of the water to grab their prey, while others squirt out a stream of water to knock the prey down into the water. The 'Seven-spotted Archerfish' Toxotes chatareus can be found in brackish waters of freshwater streams in the area, and has a series of 6 or 7 blobs on the side of the body. A large introduced population can be easily observed in the waters of Lake Eacham.
